2011 Scholarship winners  

$1000 Scholarship Recipients

Alexandra “Lexi” Turano

Lexi is already actively engaged in research at the National Cancer Institute and plans to continue her work studying the brain through  a neuroscience program at Gettysburg College .  Graduating first in her class, Lexi has strong records in academics, service to South Hagerstown High, to her church, and to the community.  She has provided active leadership in athletics and student  organiza- tions: Vice President of the National Honor Society, Junior Class President, leadership and direct participation in counseling and tutoring for other South High students, triple-lettered in varsity soccer, basketball, and track.  In addition, Lexi has participated four years in the JFK 50 Mile Run, Walk for Justice, and the Adopt a Family program.  She has been recognized as a Maryland Distinguished Scholar, as an AP Scholar, and for leadership in attending the World Leadership Conference.  Lexi plays the piano and has volunteered for numerous community programs; she also plays the violin in the Shepherd University Senior Orchestra.  Lexi embodies the rebel spirit of South High.

Matthew Terrence Koebel

Matt will attend the University of Maryland College Park where he plans to major in Finance in preparation for law school.  Matt has a strong 4.0+ academic record; he was recognized as a Maryland Distinguished Scholar, and is President of the National Honor Society and President of his Senior Class.  In addition, he was also named a Dr. Benjamin Carson Scholar for three years and was given Good Citizen Awards by both the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Elks Club this year.  He has played varsity golf and managed the varsity baseball team during his junior and senior years.  Committed to service, Matt is head tutor for the AVID program, provides counseling and tutoring for other South High students, and is a dedicated volunteer fireman in his hometown, Funkstown.  He received U.S. Congressional recognition as Volunteer Firefighter Rookie of the Year for 2009.  Matt still finds time to participate in the Mock Trial Club, Prom Committee, and as a soup kitchen volunteer.  Finally, Matt has great interest in finding ways to improve our environment – a fine representative of the South High rebel spirit.

The scholarship fund provides financial assistance to deserving South High seniors 

who are accepted and attend a post-secondary school.  Any senior in good standing at South Hagerstown High School who plans to attend a post-secondary school is eligible to apply for these two scholarships. Applications are available in the school’s Counseling Center.  See Susan Starsnik for an application and more information. 

   SHHS Alumni and associates are encouraged to make contributions to the SHHS Alumni Association Scholarship Fund.   The South Hagerstown High School Alumni Association is a 501.3c not-for-profit corporation.  Donations made to this organization are tax deductible.  Please make checks payable to:  SHHS Alumni Association Scholarship Fund
